A vision to transform the College of West Anglia's Isle campus with a new engineering centre was announced last night.

The new two-storey technology block will provide the biggest single investment at the campus site, in Wisbech, since the 1960s.

Savills, who have been asked by the college to steer through the plans, said the proposals 'are central and critical to the future of this education provider and the local community'.

Included in the plans will be the demolition of two existing teaching blocks and the building of a two storey complex on a disused area of grassland.

On the ground floor there will be a motorsports workshop, spray booth, motor vehicle body shop, engineering workshop, office and plumbing workshop.

The first floor will include an electrical installation workshop, toilets and plant room.

A new access road will also be created within the campus, off Ramnoth Road, which will enable direct pedestrian and vehicle access to the technology block.

A spokesman for Savills said: 'The existing buildings have become out of step with modern educational standards and lacking energy efficiency. They are no longer capable of providing suitable accommodation for the modern curriculum.

'This had made it difficult to justify maintaining some of these buildings on a long term basis.'

Savills said the majority of the existing buildings were built in the 1950s and 1960s and have received no significant investment since.

Detailed plans are now being considered by Fenland District Council.
