School pupils have been learning vital safety advice from a scheme that this week will celebrate a landmark achievement.

For the past decade, Norfolk County Council's fire and rescue service has coordinated the Crucial Crew project which teaches important safety tips to young people through 10-minute interactive sessions that recreate hazardous situations.

This week, at the Norfolk Showground in Costessey, about 1,000 year six pupils from 21 Norfolk schools are attending Crucial Crew workshops, bringing the total number of young people to take part in the project since it began to more than 30,000 pupils.

Doug Underwood, Crucial Crew co-ordinator, said: 'Today was an excellent start to the week. The youngsters were very vocal, which is always a good sign, and we are looking forward to welcoming hundreds more enthusiastic schoolchildren over the coming days.'

Among the schools taking part this week are West Earlham Junior, Heartsease Primary, Magdalen Gates Primary, George White Junior, Avenue Junior, Eaton Primary, Bignold Primary, and Lakenham Primary School.

Among the scenarios featured in the sessions run by the fire service and other organisations are personal safety, railway safety, first aid, fire safety in the home, internet safety, and alcohol, cigarette and drug awareness.
