For youngsters at a West Norfolk school, a chance meeting with a Second World War air gunner brought their history trip to life.

Children from Howard Junior School, in King's Lynn, visited the Duxford aviation museums at the former site of RAF Duxford on Wednesday, July 4.

Whilst looking around an aircraft hangar the children were approached by another visitor - Matthew Bunton, 93, who had flown in the Lancaster Bomber as a gunner during the war.

Mr Bunton, who was visiting Duxford with his daughter, shared his story about the war with the children.

'He went on to tell us what it was like and how he felt,' headteacher Gregory Hill said. 'His vivid descriptions made the old plane come to life. Our children thanked him for his service to our country and his bravery.

'For our pupils to have a first hand account of what life was like was better than reading any book or just looking at the plane.'
