Great Dunham Primary School has been awarded £27,700 by the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project which will research and inform communities about the men from Great Dunham and Little Dunham who died in the First World War.

The project, called Fields Familiar, Foreign and Far Away, aims to help develop an understanding of the men, virtually all farmworkers from the fields of Norfolk, who were involved in the fighting not just in France and Flanders, but in Turkey, Iraq, Egypt and Palestine.

As well as undertaking the research, pupils in the school will then share what they have found with their communities through a number of presentations and performances in Great Dunham and Dereham.

Sharon Nour, headteacher of Great Dunham Primary School, said: 'We are delighted to receive the award from HLF. Thanks to National Lottery we can play a leading role in helping our communities to remember those that died on the centenary of the end of the First World War.'

The work produced will include aspects of local culture from 100 years ago and pupils will study and write poems based on the war.

The project will create a publication which will go free to all families in the area as well as to all libraries, museums and Royal British Legion groups.
