Pupils have more space to read together and shelves full of new books after a £24,000 refurbishment of their school library.

Gaywood Primary School, in King's Lynn has converted a former classroom with green carpets, rugs, walls and blinds, the calming colour makes for a relaxing atmosphere.

Head teacher Neil Mindham said:'Fundamentally, we wanted to make a welcoming and relaxing space for children to select and read books. The library that we had really didn't have enough space for the whole class to share it at the same time.'

'Coupled with the fact we had changes to the curriculum in 2014, we needed to make sure we had enough books, fiction and non fiction that related to that and to have a refresh of the current provision to improve it.'

With purpose-built shelving filled and a variety of books for all ages to choose from. Staff hope the refurb will encourage children to love reading.

The build was funded by a £15,000 donation from the West Norfolk Academies Trust.

Mr Mindham said: 'The children love the library because it is spacious. They've got space to select their books, it looks vibrant, it's set out well.

'For a class of 30 to come and share the space at the same time it is really really important. The refresh of books includes some of the latest titles from David Walliams etc.

'With the help of the Norfolk Schools Library service and the trust we now have a larger space so that whole classes can access the library at the same time. The new library has also benefited from £9,000 worth of new books.'

The school first opened as Gaywood Primary School in September 2000 after an amalgamation between Rosebery Avenue First School and Gaywood Junior School. Presently there are 415 four to 11-year-olds children on the roll.

In June 2017, Gaywood Primary joined the West Norfolk Academies Trust (WNAT), which comprises of seven primary schools and four high schools.

There are books worth £20,000 up for grabs in the EDP's Books for Schools campaign. All you have to do is collect coupons printed in the EDP and its sister titles to win your school a share.
