Children in Easton are celebrating after their school joined the elite band of 53 schools currently rated outstanding in Norfolk.

St Peter's Primary, to the west of Norwich, was visited by inspectors last month.

In its report Ofsted lavished the school with praise in all areas including pupils' achievement, quality of teaching, and the behaviour of children.

The inspectors said: 'Pupils make outstanding progress from their different starting points. Progress is equally strong in reading, writing and mathematics.

'Teachers provide pupils with an excellent range of interesting and inspiring activities to extend their learning.

'Pupils have exemplary attitudes towards their learning. They enjoy school, behave outstandingly well and look after each other very well.'

The school, which is part of the Trinity Federation of Church Schools with Great Witchingham and Hockering primary schools, has improved its offering from good to outstanding since its last full inspection in March 2008.

Headteacher Christine Livings said: 'The quality of children's education right at the start of their school career sets the tone for their entire education. We work very hard to ensure that every aspect of what we do here is giving pupils the best chance, which is why we are so delighted that Ofsted has recognised us as an outstanding school.

'To be rated outstanding in every single aspect of what we do is a significant achievement and I would like to pay tribute to the contribution made by every one of our staff, governors, the diocese, the local authority and other partners in reaching the highest possible standard a school can achieve.'

The Ofsted report recommends teachers focus more on the accuracy of pupils' presentation skills, punctuation and spelling, and give children more opportunities to respond to comments made about their work in order to improve further.
