Darion Mayes will be studying at Cambridge University next year after achieving 4 A* grades.
Darion, 18, who lives on Highfield, Fairstead, achieved top grades in maths, further maths, additional further maths and physics and will be studying maths at Cambridge University's Pembroke College next term.
He said: 'I was hoping for the four A*s but I wasn't expecting to do as well as I did.
'I didn't realise I was one of five in the country who didn't drop a mark across further maths and I have the third highest aggregate score on the Edexcel maths board.
'My parents don't know yet but I think they were expecting me to do reasonably well.'
