Our maths and English results continue to be very strong, in line with target and well above national averages. Despite challenging grade boundaries and the increasing difficulty of the science curriculum we have achieved 75pc A-C in Maths, 66pc in English and 62pc in Double and Triple Science. We were delighted that 12 students achieved 8 or more of the top grades of A* and As and that 99pc of the year group achieved at least 5A*-G. 'We are extremely disappointed with a fall in the headline figure of A* to C grades, including English and Maths. Other schools using Welsh Board GCSE English have seen a similar decline.

'However, over 70% achieved 5 A* - C grades, comparing favourably with other schools with many students achieving highly encouraging results. Particular congratulations go to Charlotte Howard, Shona Hepworth and Matthew Wigmore who each achieved 14 grade A/A*s.

Headteacher Nicola Furneaux: 'We are a little disappointed with these headline figures, having achieved consistently higher outcomes over a number of years. However, many students have achieved superb results, particularly at the top end, with almost a quarter of all grades at A or A*. Our E-Bacc achievement, at 38%, is particularly pleasing and shows the very large proportion of our students who are successful against this academically challenging target.

The Headmaster of Gresham's School, Philip John, stated that he was very pleased with this year's GCSE results. An increase in the number of students attaining the top grades at A* to B to 76.8pc was particularly encouraging. Mr John went on to say that the results were a credit to all the pupils who had clearly worked very hard. Two pupils, Esme Haywood and Grace Pitkethly, achieved the very highest grades in all 12 subjects they sat and a large number of other students made enormous progress and achieved excellent results.

However, a statistic like this on its own fails to show the progress that has been made by our students. This year the percentage of students making expected or better levels of progress between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4 has risen by 25pc in English and 17pc in Maths. This represents a tremendous achievement by the students and they must be congratulated!'

Caroline Brooker, headteacher, said: 'Although our headline A*-C with maths and English figure is down on last year, this figure is skewed by the wideley acknowledged moving of the goalposts by the exam boards this year, and is mirrored by results at other schools. It is disappointing that statisticians are playing with children's lives in this way.

'Aside from the English results we are pleased with the overall performance, with 62pc of the year 11 group achieved five A* to C grades. Although this figure is slightly down on last year, it is in the context of a year group which joined the school below national expectations, and the overall progress has been excellent.'

Headmaster, Jason Morrow, praised students saying, 'I congratulate the girls and staff on another very strong set of results. The proportion of A* grades is up 2pc to 39pc more than 10pc of our pupils achieved straight A*s and over 40pc of the girls secured straight A and A* grades. Once again, almost 90pc of all grades are at A* to B and such consistency of academic achievement is all the more pleasing given the uncertainty surrounding this year's GCSE results.

The current level of political pressure and meddling with the examination system can be very difficult for staff, pupils and parents and it would be good to see a little more care and caution going forward. I think those involved in the rush to reform should be a little more aware of the risk of 'unintended consequences'. I struggle to see how it is going to help raise standards or enable accountability when there are ever more variables in the system and concerns over comparability of outcomes between different types of exam and from year to year.'

Head Master Steffan Griffiths said, 'There will be lots of happy faces among teachers, pupils and their families as these results are published, and rightly so: such results, the reward for disciplined work over many months, again place Norwich School among the very best co-educational day schools in the country. All involved deserve congratulations and the pupils can now look forward with confidence to their 6th Form careers.

I am particularly pleased with the results for this cohort because, in addition to their excellent academic performance, they have been conspicuously active outside the classroom: for example, the sports teams have been successful throughout the year and this has helped several pupils to go on to regional or international sporting recognition. The fact that these pupils have also been among our most successful GCSE candidates strengthens us in our philosophy of 'both...and' rather than 'either…or'.'

'The headline figures above do not fully reflect the achievements of Reepham students. For instance, in terms of the EBAC, (which measures pupil achievement in English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Foreign Languages), our success rate was more than twice as high as the national average. In addition, 27pc of all GCSE grades were at A* or A. In terms of progress measures which, unlike the 5A*-C figures, measure the achievements of all pupils, our students did well. 'We are particularly pleased with the results from subjects with 100pc A*-C pass rate; Drama, Child Care, Health and Social Care and Music. In Drama 42pc of students achieved an A*-A. We are also pleased with the ICT results where 82pc of 257 students gained an A*-C grade.
