Work on creating Great Yarmouth's first new high school in 50 years is gathering pace, with a local family firm leading construction work.
Trafalgar College will open in September in Thamesfield Way, Southtown, with around 80 Year 7 students in the first intake – many of whom attended an induction session to meet fellow pupils.
The school will eventually be housed in a new building on the seven-acre site, but its first lessons will take place in a converted office block.
And the work to create those new classrooms is being led by Great Yarmouth family firm Holmes Building Contractors, whose base is just a short walk from the school site.
Trafalgar College principal Ian Burchett said: 'After so many years of planning and all the interest from pupils and parents in the town, it is exciting to see the school becoming a physical reality, and great that we are in such safe and professional hands.'
At the summer session, students had the chance to try sport, drama, geography, and English lessons with their new classmates, with another induction day planned for late August, ahead of the school's first day in September. Trafalgar College will initially cater for just Year 7 students, growing year by year to cater for all secondary-age children.
The school will be part of the Inspiration Trust family of schools, which already includes three primary schools in the borough: Cobholm Academy, Great Yarmouth Primary Academy, and Stradbroke Primary Academy.
