International pizza chain Domino's has confirmed rumours it intends to open a branch in Beccles in the autumn.

The store will take over the former chip shop on Blyburgate, which closed in May.

Communications manager for Domino's Pizza Group Helen Tosney-Collins, said: 'We are continually researching and reviewing locations across the country in which to open new stores.

'We have identified Beccles as a great location for a new store and we hope to open the doors to the community by autumn.

'The new store will generate around 25 new jobs for local people looking to serve pizza lovers in Beccles.'

An application to Waveney District Council for permission to put up signs outside the property has been submitted, and is expected to be considered by the authority later this month.

Some residents and business owners have registered a formal objection to the bid, pointing to the number of takeaways already in Beccles and voicing their concerns over the amount of traffic delivery vehicles and customers could add to Blyburgate.

However the application, which includes plans to amalgamate the two flats above the property, received support from some, who believe a new business will bring new life to the area.
