A Valentine's night of drinks and dancing in Attleborough will help buy a man with a neurological disease a new wheelchair better suited to his needs.

Martin Manning, 46, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) ten years ago, after feeling a numbness in his leg.

Although the lorry driver initially continued to work, in 2008 he took early retirement and is now unable to walk, spending most of his day in his wheelchair.

But the chair is outdated and uncomfortable and Mr Manning is hoping to raise part of the £5,000 needed for a bespoke model, with the MS Society promising to chip in to the cost.

The father-of-two, who also has two step-children, said: 'I've been told the chair is the best I can have on the NHS, but I've had it for three years and I need something lighter and easier to use.'

Mr Manning, of Fen Street in Old Buckenham, said the first few years after his diagnosis were manageable, but the last year had been 'horrific'.

'I had a relapse last February and that's knocked me for six,' he said. 'I have a condition which they tell me is only going to get worse, so it is quite important to have the right chair.'

On Saturday, February 13, the Attleborough Fun Fest Team - the group behind the town's successful bike festival last year - will host the dance at Connaught Hall on Station Road.

As well as live music and a disco, there will be glasses of bubbly, snacks, a tombola and an auction run by Peter Neal.

Lots include a one-hour flight over Norfolk from Old Buckenham, meal vouchers at local eateries including The Mulberry Tree, Breckland Lodge, Mr D's Diner, The Gamekepeer and the Inn on the Green, as well as a champagne afternoon tea.

Tickets for the event, which will run from 8pm to 12am, will cost £5, with a glass of fizz and cheese and biscuits thrown in.

Those who can't attend the evening can pre-bid by visiting the Facebook page.
