The buns were selling for Me and My Girl on Saturday when the curtain rose on Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society's first-ever cake sale.

Today's event, at Cromer's community centre, saw cakes, crafts, jewellery and refreshments on sale in a bid to swell the society's depleted coffers.

And organisers were delighted when they totted up the takings to find they totalled almost 816 - which will rise to 1,567, thanks to a donation from Barclays Bank.

Members made a bit of a song and dance outside the venue, with a spot of impromptu tap dancing and a tune or two from their latest show, Me and My Girl.

Society secretary Amanda Howell said member Andrew Grey, who plays 'silly twit' the Hon Gerald Bolingbroke in Me and My Girl, works in Barclays' Mile Cross branch and the bank had pledged to match-fund whatever was raised at the sale, up to 750.

Ms Howell said the society had been through a difficult couple of years and had embarked on a two-to-three-year money-raising programme to replenish its funds as the big shows cost about 40,000 to stage.

They were particularly relying on local support for Me and My Girl, which can be seen at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre from May 26-June 2. Because of the Queen's Jubilee, this year's dates fell outside the society's normal May bank-holiday week production run, and so there would not be the usual number of holidaymakers in Cromer who usually boosted audience numbers.

Members had already raised some money through an in-house quiz, a murder mystery and a sponsored swim.

They are hoping their next two box-office favourite productions, The Sound of Music, planned for 2013, and Oliver! in the society's centenary year of 2014, will bring the crowds flocking back.

Meanwhile Ms Howell said Me and My Girl was great fun and a very suitable, extremely British way for north Norfolk to welcome in the Jubilee celebrations.

Set in 1937 and revised by Stephen Fry, it revolves around aristocrats, cockneys and love, and includes the well-known songs Lambeth Walk, The Sun has got his Hat on, Me and My Girl, and Leaning on a Lamppost.
