The smell of sizzling sausages, freshly baked bread and spicy curry wafted across Great Yarmouth Market Place as the annual food festival got under way.

Local traders set up stalls alongside producers from across the county to kick start the tasty event, which also features live music, free tastings and cooking demos.

The festival has returned to the town centre and extended its run to three days after last year's event proved so popular.

Among the traders were Leisa Whayman and Debbie Lilwall of Lilwalls Hog Roasts, who travelled from Whitwell, near Norwich, with a whole roast pig to serve up pork filled rolls that went down a treat with hungry visitors.

Mrs Lilwall, who with her husband rears her own pigs for the business, was making her first appearance at the festival and said it was nice to be serving some new customers.

'It's a nice area and it's a different area for us to get our name out,' she added. 'We're Norwich based and normally do private parties. We've got our own pig farm and mill our own food, it's all done in house.'

Also serving up some meaty snacks was the team from Bradwell Butchery, who were also selling a variety of sweet treats from their bakery.

Owner Andrew Edmonds, who was also appearing at the festival for the first time, said it was nice to see the Market Place full with people.

He added: 'We like to see the town centre do well. This is an opportunity to show our face and show off our produce, all of which is farmed in East Anglia.

'It's good to show off Norfolk produce.'

Visitors at yesterday's opening day enjoyed perusing the many stalls and watching demos laid on by chef lecturers from Great Yarmouth College, who cooked up Thai curry pastes and ham hock with homemade chutney.

The 2014 Norfolk Chef of the Year Daniel Smith, of the Ingham Swan, and Mark Dixon, of the King's Arms in Fleggburgh, will cook up a feast today, while Jake Weatherall, of the Florentina catering company, and Charlie Grove will take centre-stage tomorrow.

The festival continues today and tomorrow from 10am - 4pm.
