Jelly and blancmange and 1930s music were part of an unusual agenda as Cromer Women's Institute celebrated its 75th birthday.

And the nostalgic party on Tuesday was given a boost by the presence of the group's longest serving member Madelon Parsons, who joined 74 years ago, in 1938.

The Cromer WI branch was formed in 1937, to give women someone to meet away from the men.

After moving to various venues, the group was given a piece of land on Garden Street by Mrs Warnes, and the hall where the ladies still meet was built.

At the birthday party, the members wore 1930s outfits, identified old photographs of each other and played vintage games including pass the parcel.

Eighty-nine-year-old Mrs Parsons, who was 16 when she joined Cromer WI, said: 'I was brought along by my auntie, and I've been here ever since.

'I love it. Everybody is so friendly and we do lovely things together. I think younger people should come along and give it a try.'

Secretary Val Lodge said she loved the 'food and friendship'. She added: 'It's a nice friendly group and people like to meet friends.'

Vice president Glenice Knight said: 'It's used to be jam and Jerusalem, but it has changed. It has modernised. I think younger people would enjoy it.'

Cromer WI meets at 2.30pm on the second Thursday of each month at Cromer Community Centre on Garden Street. Anyone interested can call Mrs Lodge on 01263 512313.
