Cast and crew of an amateur production of The Vicar of Dibley are celebrating sky-high audience numbers.

Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society had to organise an extra, sixth, performance of the much-loved comedy after tickets sold out two weeks before opening night.

More than 1,000 tickets were eventually sold, making it the society's most successful production performed at Sheringham Little Theatre, according to chairman Robin Taylor.

The show, based on the 1994-2007 BBC TV series starring Dawn French, even attracted a coach full of people from London.

Comic Relief will benefit from all the licence fees for the production, which total £750.

Directed by Ruth Elliott, the cast included Tom Denny, as Hugo Horton, and Joanna Maxwell, as curate Alice Tinker.

Laura Williamson, as Dibley vicar Geraldine Grainger, gave a very accurate portrayal of the part made famous by Dawn French.

The production included 23 scenes, each with its own changes of lighting, music and props. Stage director Derek Walsh was in charge of choreographing the crew to ensure everything went smoothly.

The society's next production will be the musical Calamity Jane at Cromer Pier's Pavilion Theatre from May 28 to June 4. Tickets are available from the pier box office. For more information visit: www.csods.com
