It is understood the incident was the result of a long-running neighbourhood dispute, which had boiled over.

One woman, who did not wish to be named, said she was watching TV in bed when she heard commotion outside.

Five men, two aged in their 40s, one in his 30s, one in his 20s and another in his late teens, were arrested on suspicion of affray.

They have all been released pending further investigation.

It is understood that a teenager was cut across his torso with the chainsaw, but was not seriously injured.

A police spokesman said: 'It does appear that spades and a chainsaw or hedge cutter were used.

'But it does not appear that anyone was seriously hurt.'

Another witness, who only wanted to be described as a pensioner, said the area was predominantly made up of older people, and was normally a quiet place to live.
