Officers from Norfolk police have told of how they investigate allegations of historic sex abuse.

Tonight's episode of Crimewatch, which aired on BBC One, included a special feature on Operation Hydrant - which is a national scheme run to help the police investigate claims of historic sex abuse.

The case of Barry Warren, a scout master from King's Lynn, was one of several examples featured on the programme.

That investigation was led by Detective Inspector Paul Brian, who told Crimewatch how they had caught Mr Warren.

'The victims gave us their accounts independently and we were able to draw some similar facts, such as an orange jumper,' DI Brian said.

'The victims said he wore the jumper while he abused them.'

When the police searched Mr Warren's home they found a picture of him wearing the jumper, and also films of Mr Warren carrying out the sexual abuse on victims.

'Those victims on the films have never been identified,' DI Brown said.

In 2014 Warren was jailed for ten years and six months after admitting to a string of offences involving boys - some dating back to the 1970s.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Simon Bailey, Norfolk police's chief constable was also featured on Crimewatch - as he is in charge of Operation Hydrant.

He said: 'There has been a fundamental change since 2012, post Jimmy Saville.

'We have had to come to terms with the scale of the abuse, and the skills required, and the fact that officers need particular skills to deal with the calls you've heard about tonight.

'There is no doubt in my mind that the response we've put in place has improved things, and I'm delighted with our response.

'Credit must go to the officers who are dealing with cases like this on a daily basis.

'It's quite often the case that further victims will have the confidence and courage to come forward and report the abuse carried out by a person who has just been convicted.'

Norfolk's sexual assault referral centre, The Harbour Centre, operates a 24-hour service for victims of sexual abuse on 01603 276381 or through email on contact@theharbourcentre.co.uk
