Cordon lifted as police move in to seize cannabis plants and dismantle factory

Residents in Lancaster Road were briefed by officers at around 8am this morning and a cordon was set up sealing the street at both ends from St Peter's Plain to Nelson Road South.

Emergency services were called after a householder reported water leaking into her home, leading police to a cannabis factory.

But before they could investigate the scene had to be made safe.

A spokesman said it looked like 'a proper set up' and that work would begin to assess the scale of the operation, seize the plants and dismantle the factory.

At the height of the incident a clutch of emergency vehicles including five fire engines were on the scene in the heart of the urban community at one of the busiest times of day.

Emma Swann who lives in the street said she heard fire engines outside and thought it was the bin lorry.

Police had been knocking on doors, she said, but did not seem 'overtly worried.'

She understood the drama focused on a terraced house at the St Peter's Plain end of the road which extends to the seafront, and that a neighbour had alerted the emergency services to water coming through her walls.

The 36-year-old said she had been told the main danger was to do with water and electricity.
