Soft furnishings taken from an historic retreat during a community Christmas craft fair have been returned after the hall owners threatened to reveal the culprits on Facebook.

A pair of £25 cushion covers, featuring a stag and ram, were taken from a wooden pew in Hautbois Hall near Coltishall on Sunday.

A message posted on the Hautbois Hall Facebook page yesterday read: 'Nice cushion cover. Somebody else loved them too, so much they stole them. Good job we have CCTV.'

Today a message above a picture of the items read: 'Returned. Thank you.'

Co-owner of Hautbois Hall Lester Bayfield said the theft was annoying because the hall was his home.

He hoped the threat would deter future thieves.

The pew was in a barn which was full of Christmas craft stalls and visitors.

Mr Bayfield, a builder, and his wife Katie bought the hall nearly two years ago for just over £1.6m.

It was built in 1550, is Grade II* listed and was a Champagne business base before Mr and Mrs Bayfield moved into the hall.

The rural retreat is now a bed and breakfast, wedding venue and hosts community parties and functions.

It was the first time the couple had organised a Christmas craft fair but hope to put on a bigger one next year.

This is the first time there was a theft from the hall.

The cushion crime was not reported to the police.
