Andrew Hennells, 31, admitted carrying out a robbery at the Tesco store, in King's Lynn in which £410 in cash was stolen.

Appearing via a video link with Norwich prison, he also admitted having an offensive weapon, a knife, on the same date.

The 31-year-old, of Riverview Way, Gaywood, King's Lynn, robbed the store at St Faith's Drive at about 7.40pm on February 13.

Afterwards, it emerged that Hennells had posted a photograph of a large knife and a comment on Facebook saying, 'Doing.Tesco.Over.'

Judge Katherine Moore, sitting at Norwich Crown Court yesterday, adjourned Hennells' case until April 8 and asked for full pre-sentence and medical reports on him.

She said: 'I want all the up-to-date information as to his mental state.'

Hennells, who was wearing a dark polo shirt, was remanded in custody and Judge Moore warned him that all sentencing options would be open to the court.

'These are serious matters,' she said.

After the hearing, DS Pete Jessop, from King's Lynn CID, said a member of the public had tipped them off about the robbery, and that a man was demanding cash from the supermarket's customer service desk.

A number of police units - including armed officers - were deployed to Tesco.

DS Jessop said that further information was then received that Hennells was in a pub in the town. Police surrounded the pub and Hennells, who was compliant, was arrested.

A weapon was found in a car nearby and the money was also recovered.

DS Jessop said: 'We have not got to the bottom of why he posted the pictures and words on Facebook, or why he did the job in the first place. It was bizarre and an unusual set of circumstances.

'While the message and pictures on Facebook did not solve the case, it did confirm what we already knew.

'But the thing that made it easier and quicker for us to solve the case was the assistance from the public. However, the quickness does not take away from its seriousness or how traumatic it was for the victims of the robbery.'

Hennells had also posted on Facebook on the morning of the robbery that he had 'shared' a Bare Knuckles Gypsies' 'The hardest man in Ireland' video.
