A Norfolk farmer jailed for three-and-a-half years for his part in a road crash in which a woman was killed, has submitted an appeal against his sentence.

Henry Bett, 26, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial in July. Rebecca Brown, 43, died when her Fiat people carrier was involved in a head-on crash with Bett's tractor on a country road near Castle Acre, in December 2013.

The Court of Appeal in London has confirmed Bett's appeal has been lodged, but no date has been set for a hearing. Bett's legal team has declined to comment.

At his trial, jurors at Huntingdon Law Courts heard Bett, the son of Norfolk police and crime commissioner Stephen Bett, was driving in the middle of the road and may have been experiencing come-down effects of cocaine at the time.

Sentencing Bett, of Hall Lane, Thornham, Judge Peter Murphy said: 'In such a case there are no winners. Nothing can compensate for the loss the Brown family has endured.'

Bett was also disqualified from driving for five years.

The judge said he was concerned that, although professing to feel remorse, Bett had forced Mrs Brown's family to go through the ordeal of a trial.

'You were driving well over the wrong side of the road and I'm quite satisfied that although she tried to take evasive action, Mrs Brown had no chance,' he added.

The Essex Police serious collision investigation unit looked into the crime because of Bett's links to Norfolk police.
