Thieves struck at Astley Primary School in Briston two weeks ago, leaving pupils devastated.

Staff and children arrived to find their pets running loose around the field after their coop and feed were stolen.

When bosses at Holt-based Thaxters Timber read about the theft, they offered them a new one.

Ross Smith, one of the firm's directors, decided to make the donation after he saw a link to our report of the theft on facebook.

'My wife came to school here, it seemed a nice thing to do,' he added.

Fellow director Tim Schofield said: 'It's good for kids to understand while there are bad people, there are good people in life as well.'

Head Helen Pegg said: 'The support of the community has been superb, we've had many offers to replace the chicken coop, the parents have been very supportive as well.'

One parent loaned a temporary coop and chain locks to secure it. Another provided a new food bin, while others gave the chickens feed.

The thieves carried the coop across neighbouring fields and hedgerows, across the main road to where a getaway vehicle had been parked.

Staff later found a football goal had also been stolen. Police are investigating.
