From a Cinderella-style carriage, to a barn owl swooping through the congregation to deliver the wedding rings, dreams have come true for a happy couple.

Kessingland's parish church hosted a fairytale wedding on Saturday as large numbers turned out to see Mervyn Kent and Dawn James get married.

And as the guests lined up outside the 15th century church, near Lowestoft, there was applause and celebratory cries of support at 2.55pm as Miss James arrived on time – in a white Cinderella-style horse-drawn carriage.

The Rev Janet Wyer, rector of the Kessingland benefice, had ushered the wedding guests out of the church and on to either side of the road to congregate outside of St Edmund's ahead of her arrival.

Led by the two white horses, there was a picture perfect moment as the glittering carriage made its way to the church – with Dawn waving to the crowds and numerous guests as the wedding bells rang out, horns shrilled and loud applause greeted her arrival.

Mrs Wyer said: 'This is a fairytale wedding.'

Husband-to-be Mervyn Kent had already turned up in his work's lorry, as the horn shrilled out around the village as he arrived at 2.23pm. The long distance lorry driver works for Moores Refrigeration Controlled Transport (MRCT), and he said: 'This is what I wanted to arrive in.'

With the vehicle decked out in balloons to mark the occasion, it also featured ribbons and bunting complete with the words 'Mervyn and Dawn, September 10'.

And the magical stuff of fairytales continued during the wedding service – as surprised guests and a shocked wife-to-be looked on in amazement as a barn owl arrived in the church to deliver the couple's wedding rings.

Prior to the start of the ceremony, Mr Kent told The EDP: 'Nobody knows about this bar the best man, but there will be a barn owl delivering the rings.'

Churchwarden Patricia Briggs said it was a 'wonderful' service made all the more magical by a barn own swooping in from the back of the church.

Mrs Briggs said: 'Rev Wyer asked the best man for the rings to be passed forward, and that gave him his cue to hold up a gauntlet for the beautiful barn owl – which was kept in the vestry – to swoop in and land, delivering the rings from the back of the church.'

The rings were unhooked from the owl and delivered to the couple.

Full of surprises, and romantic gestures, Mr Kent had first met Miss James in 2011 as she boarded a coach he was driving in Beccles.

Four years later, he decided he wanted to return to the place where they had first met to propose to Dawn. However, his surprise early morning Christmas Day gift attracted the attention of two police officers.

It was in fact Mr Kent leading his fiancée-to-be to propose to her at the Beccles bus stop – having blindfolded Dawn on the way to keep it a secret.

Thrilled that their wedding day had at last arrived, Mr Kent said: 'There has been lots of preparation and efforts going into this day – and I am delighted that today is finally here.'
