Adriano Guedes was evicted from the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston after a two-year stay and is currently living in emergency accommodation near Lowestoft, but is not claiming benefits.

However Waveney District Council, which provides the accommodation, says it is unable to continue to support the 64-year-old as he refuses to allow the council to help him.

When speaking to the BBC, Mr Guedes said: 'I'm not in a position to live a life it's as simple as that.

'If I can't live a life, then I'd better stop living life – I don't want to live anymore.'

Mr Guedes is paralysed from the chest down following a stroke in 2008 and relies on carers.

Mark Bee, leader of Waveney District Council, said: 'Our housing officers continue to work tirelessly to try to help and engage with Mr Guedes, however it is impossible to make progress whilst he refuses to accept our support.

'Despite our best efforts, Mr Guedes has declined all our offers of rehousing within the Waveney area.

'As he does not wish to receive support from the council, we are faced with the difficult situation where he is no longer eligible for emergency accommodation and therefore alternative arrangements must be made.

'With his cooperation, we would be able to find Mr Guedes somewhere he feels comfortable and we would also be able to offer his current accommodation to a homeless family in need.'

He added: 'We are mindful of Mr Guedes' vulnerable condition and concerned that he repeatedly makes decisions which do not improve his circumstances, therefore we are seeking further professional advice.

'The situation is certainly challenging and with his engagement, we are determined to continue to try to help him where possible.'

Mr Guedes was forced by court order to leave the James Paget University Hospital on January 10.

The Department of Health estimates that the average daily cost of a hospital bed is about £400, meaning that his stay at the hospital would have cost about £340,000 in total.
