‘Growing demand means more work for volunteers:’ How you can help community theatre ensure the show goes on

They have been described as the backbone of a popular venue.
Working tirelessly behind the scenes, volunteers at Pakefield's Seagull Theatre carry out a variety of important roles to ensure the show goes on.
The small theatre, which is run as a Community Interest Company, hosts a regular stream of talent, with regional and national touring theatre companies taking to the stage alongside a range of shows, classes and workshops.
But with the theatre in Morton Road employing two paid part time staff, all other operations are undertaken by a dedicated team of volunteers – and without them, manager Karen Read says the theatre would not be able to run.
Now the community theatre is calling for more local people to get involved. Manager of the Seagull Theatre, Karen Read, said: 'We are really lucky to have a great team of volunteers who give up their time to make the Seagull a success, but in truth we need a lot more.

As the theatre goes from strength to strength as a centre for the community – offering performances of dance, music and drama throughout the year as well as performing arts classes and low cost room hire – volunteers are needed to ensure the venue can carry on.
Among the roles available to volunteers are - brochure and poster delivery staff to take publicity materials door to door throughout Lowestoft; box office staff to sell tickets each day from 11am to 3pm; front of house staff for evening performances from 6pm to 11pm most Fridays and weekends; workshop staff to help build and decorate theatrical sets, usually on weekends and sometimes evenings; technical staff to learn how to operate the lighting and sound equipment, usually evenings and on the weekend and building maintenance staff to help the upkeep of the venue.
Volunteer Marion Small said: 'The Seagull is such a friendly and welcoming place to volunteer. It would be lovely to see some more new faces to help share the workload.'
