A massive expansion of Fakenham could be put on hold after dozens of concerns have been raised over traffic, employment and integration.

North Norfolk District Council's (NNDC) plan to create up to 900 homes and an employment area on land between Rudham Stile Lane and the A148 were have been scrutinised over the past six weeks by residents and key agencies.

Other developments for the 85-hectare site could also include a new primary school, community centre, nursery, convenience store, offices, industrial development, open spaces, sports pitches, children's play areas, two parks and possibly a hotel.

But a NNDC officer has recommended the plans are not approved at this stage by the authority's Planning Policy and Built Heritage Working Party, which is due to meet on Monday (July 23), before the issue is discussed by the full council.

Some 59 representatives were made regarding the plans during the public consultation, which included Sport England, Norfolk Wildlife Trust and County Highways.

There are fears that vehicle levels along Rudham Stile Lane, Thorpeland Road and Claypit Lane, as well as other residential roads, would be affected and 'poor junctions and a dangerous bridge' could not safely accommodate increased traffic.

Other concerns raised by residents included the capacity of local schools, health services, town-centre car parks, sewerage and water supplies to accommodate the new development. If built, Fakenham's population could increase by around 20pc.
