Community bosses are getting tough on cyclists who flout the law by riding on pavements or cycling the wrong way down one-way streets.

Leaders held a demonstration at the top of Magdalen Street in north Norwich yesterday morning and spoke to the culprits to remind them of the law.

The problems are occurring despite signs on the road warning that cycling on the pavement is not allowed and culprits could be fined 30.

Sewell ward city councillor Julie Brociek-Coulton has been working with shopkeepers to crack down on dangerous cyclists for the past few days and she was joined yesterday by Marion Maxwell, the prospective Labour candidate for Mancroft ward at May's election.

Mrs Brociek-Coulton said: 'The statistics we got showed that this is a dangerous problem. We found 33 cyclists on the pathway and 21 cyclists going the wrong way down a one-way street in little over an hour. We now plan to do this on a regular basis in the future.'

She is being backed in the campaign by shopkeepers at the top of Magdalen Street including Chris Manley, director of Norwich Computers.

He said: 'The main problem is the speed at which the cyclists come down the street. If they came at a walking space, it would not be so dangerous. One of these days someone coming out of my shop will get killed or serious maimed, at least.

'We have learned to look both ways when coming out of the shop. The problem is that anybody can get on a bike and you don't need any training or to take tests, so they don't necessarily know the rules of the road. If you say anything to them, you get a mouthful of abuse.'
