Residents are being encouraged to give their views on the proposed relocation of the Post Office in the town centre.
The branch, at 51 London Road North, is planning to move to the back of the WHSmith store – about 100 meters further on from its current location.
The existing Lowestoft branch team will move to the new site and will continue to be employed by the Post Office.
The consultation opened on May 25 and runs for six weeks – ending on July 6.
Waveney MP Peter Aldous has already met with Post Office representatives to talk through the proposals – which are scheduled to take place in September.
Mr Aldous said: 'They have assured me that WHSmith is an appropriate alternative location given that it is a ground floor property that already has wide aisles, and that they will be working with customers to ensure that accessibility issues are addressed before any move.
'Having said this, many people do use the Post Office on a regular basis and I would urge people to participate in the consultation to ensure that their views are fully considered.'
Roger Gale, general manager of the Post Office Crown Network, said: 'We are committed to keeping our services on the high street which we know is hugely important to people.
'This proposal means we can continue to do that, into the future.
'Our collaboration with WHSmith helps secure the long-term viability of services for local customers.
'We must adapt to the changing needs of our customers, who want a convenient and flexible choice of when and how they do business with us – whether that is face to face or on the web.'
Subject to consultation, the new Post Office branch will have five serving positions, a mixture of one screened and four open-plan counters plus two self-service kiosks for mails transactions – including home shopping returns, E Top-Ups, and a range of bill payments.
It will have the same opening hours, from 9am until 5.30pm on weekdays and 9am until 12.30pm on Saturdays.
People are being urged to comment on the location, the proposed premises and accessibility before a final decision is made on the proposal.
At the current premises, the Post Office deals with letters and parcels, applications and licenses, travel money and services, savings, banking, insurance, credit cards and mortgages.
