The chairman of Wymondham Town Football Club has told members it 'will survive' and continue to use Kings Head Meadow.

A public meeting was held to gauge what people thought about the club and whether it is still needed in the town, before the club's committee signed a new lease from Wymondham Town Council.

Around 150 members crowded into the club house to show their support for the club, which has been part of the town since 1883.

Andy Gardiner, chairman of the club, told those who attended the meeting: 'We are Wymondham through and through and we do feel it is worthwhile keeping.

'We need to keep it going for all the generations who have used this club. If we all help, together we can keep this club going.

'We need people to come on to the committee to help keep the club going. To help put the goals up and boards out on match days. There are a lot of good organisations that use this club and we are very keen to keep that going.'

The club has until Sunday to sign the release or it will be evicted.

In February 2014 the club was close to folding but was saved by a five-person committee.

Mr Gardiner, who has been chairman for two years, insisted that the lease would be signed.

He said: 'We're very, very happy with the turnout. We will sign the lease and we hope everybody will come and support the club. This football club means an awful lot to the Wymondham community.'

The club has two teams in the Almary Green Anglian Combination, a ladies' side and an under-19s outfit. Although it does not have a youth team, Mr Gardiner said it would be keen to forge a link with Wymondham Town Youth United.

The ground is used by a number of organisations including the Royal Navy Association and can host functions.
