A district council has delayed the final verdict on a fiercely opposed Attleborough housing development application.

The planning committee at Breckland Council was due to reach a decision over plans to build 91 homes on land off Carvers Lane and pedestrianise the secluded lane on Tuesday, May 26.

But the decision has now been deferred until June or July, after developers Norfolk Homes appealed to the authority to push the deadline back.

It is a bid which has attracted widespread criticism since it was announced last year.

Residents fear that neighbouring streets would become clogged with traffic, while others have commented that Carvers Lane is often used by emergency services looking to avoid being slowed by town centre traffic.

The plans have seen more than 120 letters of objection submitted to the district council and a Facebook page and online petition set up for objectors to voice their opinions.

In one letter on the council's website, David Jack wrote: 'I feel strongly that the developers should not take that which does not belong to them without paying anything for the land on which the road is situated.'

On the committee agenda, it states that 113 letters of objection and one petition with 220 signatures have been received, but residents believe the number surpasses this.

If approved, £392,000 would be required from the developers to be spent on education contributions.

These would include nursery provision, new classrooms at Attleborough Infant and Junior Schools and Attleborough Academy.
