Hundreds of people lined the streets of Beccles to witness the carnival procession consisting of more than 45 entries including a pirate ship, samba band, dance troupes and community groups.

The success of the two-day event led organiser Annette Tackley to describe the event as 'absolutely amazing'.

'We knew it would be big parade but the feedback we have been given makes all the hours we have put into organising it, completely worth it,' she added.

'The support has been fantastic and a lot of people seemed to be putting money into the buckets. It is gaining momentum again now, for a few years it dwindled down but we are back on the right track now.'

The procession, which dates back to the pre 1900s, departed Roys car park at 1pm and the streets soon became filled with people waving flags, as the sound of carnival music and buckets rattling with coins filled the air.

The overall winner of this year's procession trophy was 'InTouch Systems' who are based in Norwich. They created a large pirate ship with smoke, music and intricate decorations.

Director Steve Temple said: 'It took us about five weeks to build.

'This is our first time here in Beccles, having done Norwich and Cromer carnivals as well.

'It feels great to win the trophy and people are enjoying themselves and really getting into the music we play.'

Miss Beccles Christine Soanes took part in the procession, as did groups including the Mutford and Wrentham Football Club, Mutford Village Hall, Framtastics Gymnastics Club, Beccles Helping Hands and Beccles Library.

Waveney MP Peter Aldous was also involved in the parade as he travelled in a vintage car.

'The sheer number of people, old and young getting involved in the different floats is what it is all about', Mr Aldous said.

'It is a family day and the streets really did come alive. The carnival is something that Beccles does really well.'

After the parade, some of the entertainment included a static car and steam display, along with the UK Teen Star Winner Breeze Redwine, Kook Sol Won, Crystalette Twirlers and Urban All Stars.

On the Saturday, the annual teddy bear parade kicked off proceedings before a children's fancy dress competition, bonny baby competition and glam gran contest were enjoyed.

And after 6pm, a number of bands and musical performers took to the stage for the Beccles Quay Rocks event- which was headlined by 'Less Than This', a five-piece rock covers band from Lowestoft.
