A day care centre is looking for volunteers to help it transport and entertain its elderly guests.

Heritage House, at Wells, is hosting an open day on Saturday, January 23 (2 - 4pm), where anyone interested can find out more.

As well as tea and cake, volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about their role at the centre, which raised more than £2,000 to help fund its activities with a New Year's swim and other festive events.

Care centre manager Mary Britton said: 'It's not just money we need to keep going. We also rely very heavily on the support of our volunteers and, at the moment, we are desperately short of people to man the ambulances that bring day visitors into Wells each day, provide transport in their own cars and help care for and entertain our beautiful elderly during their day with us.'

Christmas events included a pre-Christmas cake and produce stall in Burnham Market, which raised more than £520 and a charity event and a Christmas hamper raffle organised by the Nelson Inn, which raised £250.

Nigel and Janet Slegg donated £300 after a Christmas lights switch-on at their home in North Creake.

Heritage House's annual Nippy Dip at Wells Beach on New Year's morning raised more than £1,100, after 28 people braved the cold North Sea on what turned out to be one of the first frosty days of this winter - some of them going in twice.

Heritage House is in Mill Road, next door to Wells Hospital and there is ample parking.
