Foodie fans look set to have a happy Fry-day in Cromer as a top Norfolk chef prepares to open his new fish and chip restaurant.

Galton Blackiston, owner of Michelin-starred Morston Hall, said his new venture, No.1 Fish and Chips, will open to sit-down customers tomorrow (Friday).

Builders and decorators have been busy kitting out the premises in New Street for several weeks, which includes a take away and ice cream parlour.

Mr Blackiston, who with wife Tracy, joined forces with friends Spencer Gray and Chris Griffin to establish the business.

Diners will be able to enjoy a traditional menu from tomorrow featuring pies, sausages and fish and chips, with an extended menu being introduced in September when the business has its official launch.

Mr Blackiston said this would include extra seafood treats, such as lobster, crab cakes and mackerel, as well as different ways of cooking.

'We'll be grilling, pan frying and we'll be deep frying,' he added.

On Monday he took a break from the restaurant to cook up a class for students at Cromer Academy, as part of their end of year activities week.

Using the theme of being stranded on a desert island the students learnt about science, technology, engineering and maths.

Mr Blackiston kick started the activities when he dropped in to barbecue mackerel and crab - two dishes the stranded students could have fished for on their island.

After Mr Blackiston's demonstration the children were given a set of ingredients - donated by Morrisons - to cook their own tropical feast on fire pits they dug themselves.

Science teacher Ben Bestwick said: 'Nothing is going to be marked today. The marking is does it taste good, can I survive on it?'

Students also tried their hand at making stills to produce drinking water, fashioning paper rockets to send an updated message in a bottle and orienteering around Holt Country Park.
