Norfolk Wildlife Trust is close to its target of buying 655 acres of wetland habitats, including half of the biggest broad in the Broads National Park, Hickling.

Since the appeal launch in November, £825,000 has been donated by NWT members, the general public and businesses. Together with commitments from charitable trusts, the trust is now close to its £1m target, and is delighted the public continues to donate at this vital stage, with completion of the land purchase expected in the next few weeks.

NWT chief executive Brendan Joyce said: 'It is an incredible achievement in such a short time and we are extremely grateful to all our supporters for their help at such short notice.'

When the appeal was launched, Mr Joyce said: 'Ownership is the only way of securing the [broad's] long term future.'
