A 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being hit by a double-decker bus in Dereham.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Shipdham Road, near the Rash's Green junction, at 4.20pm on Wednesday.

The young pedestrian was hit by an empty 'out-of-service' First X3 bus, en route to collect passengers from Easton College.

An ambulance service spokesman said the boy was conscious and breathing after the accident, but was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with head injuries.

A Norfolk police spokesman said no arrests were made and the youngster's contact with the bus was believed to have been accidental.

A spokesman for the First group said: 'As the bus was out of service there were no passengers on board, and the bus did not carry on its journey after the incident.

'We have spoken with the police, and an internal investigation is taking place using our CCTV footage.'
