A woman who has brought life-changing experiences to dozens of young people has been awarded the Fakenham Mayor’s Community Award.
With just six members, Fakenham Wensum Scout Group was on the brink of closure four years ago,
But the tireless work of volunteer Bobbie Stevenson ensured the group is thriving.
It now consists of a group of 60 young people, including Cubs, Beavers and Scouts.
Ms Stevenson was presented the award by mayor George Acheson at the Annual Town Assembly on Monday night.
Mr Acheson said: “She is very a worthy winner and she has worked hard to ensure this group has made such progress.
“The group does some great work and it needs more adult supporters in the Fakenham area to help out. I’d urge anyone who feels they can help to get in touch.”
The evening also saw Commendation Awards presented by the mayor to Jonathan Court, Tom Sutton and Andrew Dix.
Thomas Ware and Richard Easter, who could not attend, will also be given Commendation Awards.
All five got out in their 4x4 vehicles to help some 120 drivers stranded in the snow during the Beast from the East.
Mr Acheson said: “They all did a tremendous job and we wanted to publicly thank them for what they did.”
Mr Acheson has been re-elected to serve for a second successive year as Fakenham mayor.
Gilly Foortse will serve again as deputy mayor.
Mr Acheson said: “We’ve got a few important projects on the go which we’d like to see through as mayor and deputy mayor.
“Also, I’m finding there are fewer people who have the time to commit to these roles.”
At Monday night’s meeting, Mr Acheson said Fakenham Town Council and North Norfolk District Council are actively pursuing central government funds for the road improvements to enable the town to cope with the extra 900 homes due to be built in the north of Fakenham.
Mr Acheson said: “We are determined that these improvements must be made if the development is to proceed.”
