A day centre which provides services for adults with disabilities is in desperate need of a volunteer minibus driver.

The May Centre in Beccles, which has been running for 35 years, is appealing for a new volunteer to join the team and transport people to and from the facility.

The volunteer would be needed to drive a 17-seater Mercedes Sprinter bus on a Thursday.

Dermot Wesley-Smith, from the May Centre, said: 'Without the bus provision our regular members won't be able to get out of the house and enjoy the May Centre, which is run by volunteers.

'The position would suit someone who can work with an enthusiastic and friendly team and is happy to help people with mobility problems by collecting them in the morning and returning them to their homes at the end of the day.

'It is a very rewarding occupation if you wish to help the local community.'

The May Centre was built in 1982 by the late Ken Markland - the then mayor of Beccles - who realised the need for a centre for adults with disabilities. He was chairman of the centre until he died in 2006 aged 89.

In February last year, the road leading to the May Centre was officially unveiled as Ken Markland Way, named in honour of his work in the town.

The previous year the May Centre celebrated its 33rd birthday with the unveiling of a new £55,000 minibus, which was bought to replace a 10-year-old vehicle.

The centre is entirely funded by donations and fundraising events and offers a meeting place with a range of activities for local people including bowls, guest speakers, quizzes, outings and more.

The volunteer post amounts to around three hours a day, and anyone interested needs to be over 21 and hold a full licence with a D1 proviso.

Helpers are also on board for every trip and training will be given.
