It was an auspicious night for future couples to meet on.
VJ (Victory in Japan) night, August 15, 1945, was the occasion when thousands of people celebrated Japan's final surrender to the Allies after almost six years of war.
And it proved an equally noteworthy night for Leonard and Dorothy Alexander, who met on that date.
Mr Alexander bought his bride-to-be a meat pie, and the rest is, as they say, history.
The couple, from Mileham, near Dereham, married on June 28, 1947 in Fakenham and celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, June 28.
They are now 94 and 87, respectively, and Mrs Alexander said the secret of their long life together was 'pulling together all the while. We always had discussions and came to an agreement'.
Their daughter Linda Palmer, who lives in Dereham, said: 'They have generally enjoyed life, and had some really good holidays with the family. They always went on holiday with members of the family. It's quite an achievement to be married for 70 years.
'Dad said if he had his time over again he would still pick mum, as she was his world.'
Mr Alexander was originally from East Raynham and his wife from Brundall.
He was in the Home Guard during the Second World War, as his daytime job, a farmworker, was one of the occupations necessary to keep the country running.
He worked on the farm until he was 70. Mrs Alexander had various jobs. She worked at the printing works in Fakenham, and also worked on the land and in hotels.
For their wedding anniversary they plan to celebrate at home and are expecting visits from various members of their huge family.
Most of the family live nearby with only their daughter Heather living outside the county, in Lincoln.
For their 60th anniversary about 35 members of the family went on a luxury cruise around the Mediterranean.
Mr Alexander used to mend clocks as a hobby and always loved gardening.
His wife used to knit a lot and loves the grandchildren.
They have six children, Trevor, Heather, Linda, Anne, Melvyn and Julie, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
