A much-loved postie has been given a heartfelt send-off after completing his final delivery.

East Runton locals turned out in force to celebrate John Fowler's retirement after 18 years delivering post in the village.

Around 90 people gathered by the village sign to wish him well.

Mr Fowler said: "The dogs have always been lovely in East Runton, I have loved working round here.

"Working in a village is brilliant because you get to know everybody.

"I am most excited to being able to wake up early in the morning and not having to go to work early in the morning."

The surprise gathering included a retirement fund of nearly £450, a memory book, and a large card signed by dozens of residents.

The event was organised by villagers after Mike Ashwell, a recipient of Mr Fowler’s deliveries, suggested signing a card and the idea quickly grew into a larger celebration.

Mr Ashwell said: "John is a wonderful chap, totally reliable.

"I will miss John being my postman, he always has a good word for everybody and always has a treat for the dogs.

"I think the dogs will miss him more than the people."

Friends and neighbours clapped as Mr Fowler arrived on his final shift and sang a rousing chorus of He's a Jolly Good Fellow when he was presented with his card and memory box. .

Gazebos were set up with tea and coffee, and neighbours gathered to share stories and laughter in the sunshine.

One of Mr Fowler’s final tasks that day was helping the new postman learn the round.

Mr Fowler has lived in Cromer for 30 years.
