A former UEA medical student has admitted causing the death of a cyclist in a crash in Norwich.

Yasin Khan was driving a Volkswagen Golf when it was involved in a crash with 38-year-old cyclist Ben Steward on the A140 at Guardian Road, close to Earlham Cemetery.

Emergency services attended but Mr Steward, of Godric Place, Norwich, died at the scene in February 2023 having suffered multiple injuries.

Khan, whose LinkedIn profile shows he was studying for a medical degree at the University of East Anglia during the same year, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The 23-year-old, from Rowantree Road, Newcastle, appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Tuesday (July 7) when he pleaded guilty to the offence.

There was a smattering of applause from those representing Mr Steward in the public gallery after Khan, who wore a black suit and white shirt in the dock, entered his guilty plea.

Judge Katharine Moore adjourned sentencing until September 11 to allow a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

But Judge Moore warned the fact she had ordered a pre-sentence report was "not an indication the sentence won't be imprisonment".

Judge Moore said it was a "serious matter" and on the face of it "the custodial threshold has been crossed".

Khan, who has also had jobs as an Amazon delivery driver and a barber, was represented by Andrew Oliver at the hearing.

Following the fatal collision, which happened during the early evening of February 27 2023, police appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage as part of an extensive investigation that has taken more than three years.

Following the death of Mr Steward, his brother Kyle said on Facebook: "RIP big bro. Love you more than I ever expressed. I'll miss you so much, my heart's broken."

A tribute posted on an online memorial page set up in his memory said: “You are so very very missed by everyone. Your kind heart and amazing smile and the way you were always smiling. Shine bright up there Ben.”

Another added: “I still can’t believe that you have gone but you will never be forgotten.”
