Gulliver wind turbine suddenly stops working in Lowestoft

A troubled 413ft tall wind turbine has suddenly stopped working.

The Gulliver wind turbine at Ness Point, Lowestoft, received a major overhaul from renewable energy company Thrive Renewables last December.  

But the clean energy-generating blades have now gone from spinning to stationary after a "fault" emerged on Wednesday.

One Ness Point local, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims that engineers have carried out repairs at the site "at least once a month" since the start of the year.

"Recently, it's been only two weeks between each breakdown, and like I say its normally Monday they spend travelling here," he said. "It's normally 9am on a Tuesday before they arrive in the yard."

A spokeswoman for Thrive Renewables said: "A fault was identified on Wednesday evening, with technicians expected on site early next week to investigate.

"We expect the turbine to be operating again soon."

Earlier this year, locals complained about how Gulliver suddenly became noisy overnight, with one person comparing the invasive sound to constant "jet planes".

Since the company acquired the turbine in 2005, it has generated more than 88,800 MWh of clean electricity for UK homes and businesses. 

When it was built nearly 20 years ago, it was the largest onshore wind turbine in the UK. 

It measures 413ft from its base to the tip of its highest blade.
