A "massive four-foot hole" in a pub beer garden has been cordoned off due to a water mains leak and the possible subsidence of a flood defence.

The leak has caused what appears to be a sinkhole in Norada Grill and Tavern's pub garden in Bridge Road, Potter Heigham.

The leak was reported at around 7pm on Monday.

Owner, Costa Mantilaris, said: "The water started flooding to the Broads and Anglian Water were here within the hour to try to fix the leak.

"It's a massive four-foot hole in the beer garden, it's been cordoned off, but we're losing trade because of it.

"It's coming up to the busiest bank holiday and it's taken away six benches, the beer garden looks a mess and it's our main feature by the river.

"People want to come and sit out in the beer garden and have a drink, they don’t want to be stuck inside."

The Norada had organised an outdoor celebration for its seventh anniversary in June, with a live singer and a canopy which was going to be based in the beer garden.

Mr Mantilaris added: "It's going to be weeks before it's sorted.

"Even if they fill it in, works need to be all redone, gravel and resurfacing, the repairs won't get done until the end of June.

"Anglian Water haven’t been in touch since Monday, no one knows what's going on and that’s what's upsetting."

It has been reported that the mains leak is due to an issue with a break.

The wall next to the water mains is part of a flood defence and the damage from the leak has been described as "quite substantial".

The ground is reportedly starting to sink in the area adjacent to the bridge.

Anglian Water, Norfolk County Council and the Environment Agency have all been contacted for comment.
