A football fan has been hospitalised after an attack at a local final.

The supporter, a man in his 20s, was punched in the back of the head after the Norfolk Junior Cup final between Watlington and Dersingham.

The Watlington fan suffered serious injuries and an ambulance took him to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital where he remains.

Police were called to the match, held at Dereham Town's Aldiss Park, at around 9.45pm on Friday.

In a statement a spokesman for Watlington FC said: "We do not condone the events that happened post our Norfolk Junior Cup Final on Friday.

"Watlington Football Club are reaching out to appeal for witnesses and encourage these witnesses to contact the police or the club for information.

Reports suggest the assault occurred as a result of a clash between supporters - although police enquiries are ongoing.

The King's Lynn club added: "The club would like to thank the stewards and committee members of Dereham Football Club for their swift response assisting with emergency first aid at the immediate scene."

Watlington beat out their fellow west Norfolk side with the score ending 1-0.

Ben Baxter-Hunt's first-half goal decided the tight end-to-end game which saw several shots, several saves and several yellow cards.

The incident took place shortly after the final whistle was blown with stewards acting quickly before emergency services arrived.

In a club statement, Dersingham Rovers said: "We would like to place on record that we are positive no individuals affiliated to Dersingham were involved in this incident.

"The club will not make any further comments and will support where needed in the ongoing investigation.

"We are proud of how our club and supporters conducted themselves at the event."
