Norwich chip shop still closed week after fire broke out

Several fire appliances were called to Barrett’s Fish and Chip shop on Reepham Road after reports of a fire at the Hellesdon chippy last Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters tackling the blaze at Barrett's chip shop (Image: Leigh Parsons)A week on and the chip shop remains closed with a Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman saying "the cause of the fire is under investigation".

Work can be seen going on inside the shop to try and repair the damage while a sign in the window simply states "closed until further notice".

Barrett's chip shop still closed after fire (Image: Peter Walsh, Newsquest)The fire service spokesman said the damage caused as a result of the fire was "confined to the main shop, thanks to the work of crews from Earlham and Sprowston who were first on the scene".

The spokesman added there was smoke damage elsewhere in the building.

Crews from Sprowston, Carrow, Earlham and Dereham were pictured by locals fighting the fire which broke out shortly before 3pm.

As previously reported, a member of staff at Blossom and Bows near to Barrett's said: "I was out on a delivery when it first started and I couldn't believe when I got back and saw.

"We would say it was quite a big fire.

"The road was initially blocked for a bit until they moved the fire engines over so traffic could get past."

Leigh Parsons, who witnessed the fire, said: "I live in Hellesdon - this was sad to see but hopefully they will bounce back and open again.

"There was no ambulance so I don't think anyone was hurt and I didn't see any police."
