An aircraft made an emergency landing in a Norfolk field after running out of fuel.

A report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said the Denney Kitfox MK2 had taken off from a farm near Lowestoft to fly to Leicester on September 22.

The 55-year-old pilot intended to return the following day, with the aircraft fitted with a cargo pod to carry extra baggage.

But the AAIB, which classed the incident as "serious", said the pod fitted beneath the aircraft may have resulted in "higher than anticipated fuel consumption" on the flight home.

It added: "The pilot recognised a low fuel situation and planned a landing at Old Buckenham to refuel.

"Before arrival, the engine started to lose power, so the pilot initiated a field landing. There was no damage or injuries."

The report said the pilot attempted to find out what effect the cargo pod would have on fuel consumption but there was no reliable information available from the manufacturer or other owners.

He allowed more than 25pc extra fuel for the 160-mile round trip, but this was not enough.
