Villagers have been forced to travel twice as far to get to their nearest town due to disruptive roadworks.

Simultaneous works in Cemetery Lane and Station Road in Silfield, near Wymondham, have led to complaints from locals who are unable to make their usual journeys.

Suzanne Nuri-Nixon, chairwoman of Wymondham Town Council, said many people were seeing their journey lengths double as a result of the roadworks, which are being carried out by Anglian Water.

She added: "People are fed up with this and there is a lot of frustration. We've had a complete lack of communication about what is going on and there has been no advance warning.

"I understand that you can't stop emergency works but I feel so sorry for people. They're very unhappy.

"Buses can't get through the village and a lot of people can't get into Wymondham."

Cemetery Lane has been closed since April 2 while a new water main is installed, with three-way traffic lights in place, and is due to reopen at the end of the week.

Station Road is closed while Anglian Water repairs a burst water main. It was also shut earlier this month due to maintenance and repair of the pipes in the area.

Further closures are planned next month as a section of Station Road will be shut for bridge repairs over two days.

Ms Nuri-Nixon said the works have left her with a 12-mile diversion through Ashwellthorpe into Wymondham, more than double her usual journey length.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: "We’re grateful to residents and road users for their patience while we complete this essential work and get the road running again later this week."
