The plight of a partially-sighted family friend who has been left without a guide dog has prompted a horse riding trainer to take action.

Thetford local Leah Wooderson, 35, is organising a charity dog show in support of Guide Dogs UK, to be hosted at Goodrich Park in Palgrave on July 7.

‘‘This is our first ever charity day and dog show, so it is somewhat a trial run,’’ Leah said.

With a target of £500, Leah’s event will include 16 classes and a championship for all the winners at the end. Such awards will include best young handler, best large breed, waggiest tail and others.

This event is inspired by the plight of Leah’s friend’s mother, Tracy Brunelli, 59, who has partial blindness and whose guide dog has recently retired.

Due to a long waiting list for guide dogs, Leah has decided to combine her love of dogs and horses for the cause.

Having moved from Diss to Thetford in 2019 with her partner Adrian, 39, Leah was drawn to a local livery yard to ride her horse, Milly.

After that did not work out, Leah and Adrian decided to create their own riding club, Norfolk Nutty Nags.

Having felt rejected by the club she had approached, Leah said: ‘‘I didn't want to think of anyone else feeling like I did at that moment."

Leah said Norfolk Nutty Nags prioritises kindness and respect, with its Facebook group now boasting 1,300 members and events organised including forest rides, beach rides and jump and agility clinics.

A lifelong dog lover, currently in ownership of three dogs, Leah hopes to organise similar charity dog and horse shows in support of Guide Dogs UK in support of Tracy and all those dependent on guide dogs nationwide.
