Police made 11 arrests as Norwich City defeated Ipswich Town in the East Anglian derby.

The arrests, before during and after Norwich’s 1-0 victory, were for a range of offences, including criminal damage, throwing an object, antisocial behaviour and letting off a smoke device, and all those arrested remain in police custody.

The clash saw more than 27,000 fans – including 2,020 travelling Ipswich Town fans - attend the game at Carrow Road.

Before kick-off, bottles were thrown between rival sets of fans as Ipswich supporters arrived at the ground.

After the match, police cordons were placed around the stadium and roads were closed so that fans could get home safely.

Match-day policing commander, Superintendent Kris Barnard said: "I’d like to thank everybody at Carrow Road this afternoon.

"We know this match means a great deal to both sets of fans who want to show their support and get behind their team, and I’m pleased that they did that with good spirit and humour.

"We always said our policing approach would be friendly and fair and our focus was on those people whose behaviour spoilt the enjoyment or safety of others.

"I want to thank everybody for their understanding and cooperation in helping us to ensure this match passed off safely."

There was a strong police presence in the city before and after the game.

Senior commanders said it had taken months of planning and involved officers from Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and the British Transport Police, as well Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service, the East of England Ambulance Service, both football clubs and Norfolk County Council.
