A grieving mechanic took his own life after struggling to come to terms with the loss of his mum, an inquest has heard.

Barry Thomson, 74, was found dead in the garage of his home in Ditchingham, near Bungay, by his son Paul on January 15, 2024.

An inquest heard that on the day of his death, Mr Thomson's son Paul had taken his mum Pat to a hospital appointment.

As they were leaving Mr Thomson, who was born in St Albans, said he would "see them later" and they both thought there was "nothing unusual" about his behaviour.

When Paul and Pat returned at 4pm that afternoon they noticed the garage light was on.

They found their loved one unresponsive inside.

Emergency services were called and he died at the scene.

The medical cause of death was given as hanging and area coroner, Yvonne Blake, concluded that the cause of death was suicide.

She said that he was "grieving" the loss of his mother who had died in December at the age of 100.

In addition, it was said Mr Thomson was struggling to look after his wife who was recovering from a stroke.
