The owners of a town's dessert shop have said they are "delighted" to be selling their own ice creams after investing £40,000 into their business. 

Ian and Carla Smith had been importing the ice creams sold at their Bungay shop Gelato and Sorbetto. 

But the couple, who opened their business last May, are pleased to now be making their product using locally sourced ingredients.

Mr Smith said: "We believe this is the best locally made gelato, we are super proud of the investment and excited to be offering it to the people of Bungay.

“We were spending so much buying it in, and while this is a big investment, we have always aspired to make our own authentic ice creams and gelatos.

"I am always thinking of ways we can improve the business, and as a local family, we want to serve the best and highest quality product at a fair price as we want to be a pillar of the town and community."

The owners hope that despite coughing up thousands of pounds on the ice cream-making equipment, they will get their money's worth as they plan to run the business for as long as they can.

"We have been here nearly a year and we are really happy to serve the town, hopefully for the long run.

"Now we sponsor the Bungay under 7s football teams and we really are committed to giving something back to the town as we really appreciate the support we get."

The couple say that by making their own products they can follow trends and will have more control.

"This gives us total autonomy over what we sell and cater to whatever current trends there are.

"We had many customers asking for Barbie ice cream when the movie first came out.

"But now we can roll with the trends and make batches of different ice creams depending on requests as we want to give our customers what they want, it is really exciting," Mr Smith said. 

The shop is the former Norwich and Peterborough Building Society on the corner of the Buttercross.
